The Union Cabinet approved a tougher anti-paper leak bill on Friday, hours after Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced the government’s intent to act on the issue.
The bill seeks to amend the Public Examinations (Prevention of Unfair Means) Act, 2024, increasing the minimum jail term for those convicted of paper leaks from three years to five.
In cases involving organised paper leaks, the bill proposes a jail term of up to 10 years and a fine of up to Rs 10 crore.
The proposed changes come in the wake of the national uproar over the 2024 NEET-UG and UGC-NET paper leaks, which led to the original Act.
The bill is expected to be taken up in Parliament for consideration and passing on Monday.
