Gill overtakes Mitchell to top ICC’s ODI batting rankings

Shubman Gill has overtaken New Zealand’s Daryl Mitchell to become the world’s No. 1 ranked ODI batter, according to the latest ICC rankings.

The India batter’s rise followed strong scores in the recent ODI series against England, where he made an unbeaten 80 in the first match and 77 in the third ODI at Lord’s.

Mitchell, previously ranked No. 1, has dropped to second place after a subdued run that included a score of 65 in an opening ODI against West Indies followed by two innings of 28 apiece.

Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma continue to occupy third and fourth spots respectively in the updated rankings.

Elsewhere in the rankings, 15-year-old Vaibhav Sooryavanshi climbed 230 places in the T20I batting charts to reach 48th, up from 278th before a series against Zimbabwe.

The jump came after Sooryavanshi scored 151 runs over a three-match T20I series against Zimbabwe, including two half-centuries.

Gill’s ascent to the top of the ODI rankings comes while he continues in his role as India’s ODI captain, a position he has held since October 2025 after replacing Rohit Sharma ahead of the Australia tour.

The rankings update follows India’s recent tour of England, during which several batters produced strong performances in the white-ball leg.

England took the three-match series 2-1, winning the second ODI at Cardiff by four wickets and the third at Lord’s by 27 runs after India had won the series opener in Birmingham by six wickets. Joe Root was named Player of the Series for England after scoring 249 runs in the three matches.

ICC batting rankings are updated regularly based on recent performances, with points weighted more heavily toward matches played against stronger opposition and in bigger series.

Gill has held the India ODI captaincy since October 2025, when he replaced Rohit Sharma for the tour of Australia, and has since led the side through series against New Zealand and Australia.
