Vinod Chopra Films has pulled its restored re-release of ‘1942: A Love Story’ from most cinema halls just days after it returned to theatres.
The Anil Kapoor and Manisha Koirala-starrer was re-released on August 21 in a restored 8K resolution with remastered Dolby 5.1 surround sound.
The production house said most Indian cinemas currently only support 4K projection technology, making them unable to properly display the 8K restoration as intended.
In an official statement, the makers said, “Because we refuse to compromise on quality, the film will now play exclusively in handpicked theatres that meet the experience we ideally want to present.”
The restoration involved over 150 people working roughly 8,500 human hours to manually retouch, colour-grade and quality-check all 233,759 individual frames of the film.
The audio overhaul, upgrading R D Burman’s soundtrack to Dolby 5.1, was carried out in collaboration with L’Immagine Ritrovata in Bologna, Italy, and Prasad Film Labs in India.
‘1942: A Love Story’ originally released in 1994 and starred Anil Kapoor and Manisha Koirala in a romance set against India’s independence movement, going on to become one of Hindi cinema’s most acclaimed soundtracks.
The re-release followed NH Studioz’s acquisition of Vinod Chopra Films’ catalogue, part of a broader effort to restore the director’s body of work in high resolution for future theatrical and streaming re-releases.
The makers described the restoration as ‘future proof,’ saying it would allow audiences to revisit the film repeatedly as cinema projection technology continues to improve in the coming years.
The film’s soundtrack, composed by R D Burman, remains one of the most celebrated in Hindi cinema, and the Dolby 5.1 remaster is intended to give audiences a chance to experience it in a significantly upgraded format.
Vinod Chopra Films has indicated that other titles from its catalogue could receive similar 8K restorations in the future, following the same painstaking frame-by-frame process used for this re-release.
