India declared their first innings at 503 for 9 on day two of the second Test against Sri Lanka in Colombo, built around a maiden century in Sri Lanka from wicketkeeper-batter Dhruv Jurel.
Jurel scored 100 off 177 balls, anchoring the innings with what commentators described as risk-free run accumulation through the middle overs.
Rishabh Pant, who had retired hurt on day one after a wrist blow, returned to the crease and made 63, adding 112 runs with Jurel in a key partnership.
Manav Suthar chipped in with 39 as India pushed the total past 500 before Rishabh Pant’s team declared with play affected by rain during the extended session.
In reply, Sri Lanka closed on 8 for 2 at stumps, with Lahiru Udara dismissed by Prasidh Krishna and Prabath Jayasuriya sent back by Manav Suthar; Kamil Mishara remained unbeaten on 5.
Sri Lanka trailed by 495 runs when play ended at 5:51 pm local time, leaving the hosts under significant pressure heading into day three at the Sinhalese Sports Club Ground.
The match, running from August 23 to 27, is the second Test of the series, with India already holding a 1-0 lead after a 165-run win in the series opener at Galle.
Jurel’s century was his first Test hundred on Sri Lankan soil and came in only his sixth Test appearance, further cementing his growing role as a middle-order option for India in the longer format.
India’s bowlers, led by Prasidh Krishna and spinner Manav Suthar, will look to build on the early breakthroughs on day three as they push for a series-clinching win in Colombo.
A win in this Test would give India an unassailable 2-0 lead in the two-match series, capping what has been a dominant tour so far for the visiting side across both venues.
