The Sensex and Nifty 50 extended their losing streak to five consecutive sessions on Friday, weighed down by a fresh rise in crude oil prices linked to the ongoing US-Iran standoff.
The BSE Sensex closed at 76,059.77, down 331.62 points or 0.43 per cent, while the Nifty 50 fell 102.15 points, also 0.43 per cent, to end at 23,767.45, below the 23,800 level.
Auto, metal and energy shares led the decline through the session, reflecting the sensitivity of these sectors to rising input costs and global crude prices.
IT and media stocks were the exceptions, closing higher and offsetting a part of the broader market’s losses.
The fifth straight day of declines underlines the pressure Indian equities have faced this week from the geopolitical situation between the US and Iran.
