Six districts in Odisha — Cuttack, Jagatsinghpur, Kendrapara, Jajpur, Dhenkanal and Angul — are under a red alert issued by the India Meteorological Department, which is forecasting extremely heavy to very heavy rainfall over the next 48 hours.
Thunderstorms and lightning are also expected in these areas. The IMD has warned that the rainfall could cause landslides in hilly terrain and flash floods in low-lying areas.
The alert follows the intensification of a Low Pressure Area over the West Bengal coast into a Well-marked Pressure Area over the northwest Bay of Bengal and adjoining Odisha-West Bengal coasts, recorded at 5:30 am IST on Sunday.
Coastal authorities have advised fishermen against venturing into the deep sea or nearby waters for the next four days due to rough sea conditions.
Central Maharashtra has also been placed under a red alert this week as part of wider heavy rainfall activity across several Indian states.
