A red alert has been issued for parts of eastern Rajasthan, Gujarat and Madhya Maharashtra, with the India Meteorological Department warning of extremely heavy rainfall.

Some locations could see rainfall exceeding 204.5mm, while wider areas are expected to receive between 115.6mm and 204.4mm.

The IMD has flagged the risk of flash floods, overflowing rivers and localized infrastructure damage as a result of the rain.

The system driving the weather is a well-marked low-pressure area over southeast Rajasthan and adjoining Madhya Pradesh, along with an upper-air cyclonic circulation.

A second cyclonic circulation is active over the northwest Bay of Bengal, and a western disturbance continues to affect Jammu and Kashmir.

Thunderstorms, lightning and strong winds are also forecast across several states, prompting advisories for residents and farmers.
